Welcome to a new section of Pennies on a Platter! I debated on what to title this weekly post, ensuring to capture my purpose for it. Four sections will be included to finish off each week, hopefully acting as a garnish by embellishing the blog with more recipes and personal insight into my life. I've seen other bloggers do this and have really appreciated the recap. Hopefully you'll enjoy reading mine!
The first section will review the week's posts, in case you missed them. 😉 I'll also share new updates to the blog, if any. Then, we'll dig into the archives and reconsider some of my older recipes that we enjoyed during the week. The third section I'll link to other recipes or products that caught my eye on other food blogs or websites. Lastly, you'll get a chance to look into my day to day life as I'll summarize the events of our week as a family.
So let's get started!
This Week on Pennies on a Platter
This section highlights the recipes posted this week on Pennies on a Platter and other updates to the blog, if any.
Beef Braised in Red Wine - A roast slowly cooked in a wine sauce, then served sliced on a platter with assorted vegetables.
Chocolate Malt Cupcakes - Chocolate malt in cupcake form! Including a frosting that has now become one of my favorites.
Sausage and Cheese Balls - A staple in our freezer that we can warm up in the microwave in a matter of seconds, for either breakfast, lunch or a snack.
New to the blog - Readers' Recipes feature: I want to try your recipes! Today I added a submission form where you can send me your favorite recipes. Each month I will feature you and one of the recipes. Click here for more information.
Dug Out from the Archives
Let's dig into the archives and reconsider some of the older recipes on Pennies on a Platter. (Some of which I plan to re-post with new photos and better directions in the near future.)
Homemade Oreo Ice Cream - After my initial trial of this recipe, I began stirring the chopped cookies into the ice cream by hand instead of adding to the ice cream machine. I finally caught a new photo of how it looks versus the chocolaty appearance it takes on when adding the cookies to the ice cream machine. I'll add the new photo soon, along with a re-post of the recipe.
Death by Chocolate - One of my very first posts back in 2007. I'm embarrassed to say I used a trifle bowl, but called it a "truffle" bowl in the post! Go ahead, take a look, I haven't updated it yet just so you can be amused. 🙂
Caught My Eye
I love reading other blogs and websites, and often bookmark their recipes, products or reviews. These are a few that top my list from the week.
Google's Recipe View - Google rolled out a new search feature this week where you can narrow your search down to include only recipes, along with a few other nice options. Ben emailed this Engadget article to me right away when he saw it.
Mushroom Risotto - Many of my bookmarked recipes are from Kevin's blog. This one is getting moved up in my to-do list as I've been wanting to try a risotto recipe and mushroom sauces are a favorite of mine.
Cashew Chicken Stir-Fry - It's been a while since I've made stir-fry and this reminded me of what I'm missing out on. Hopefully it'll grace our meal plan very soon.
The Life of a Pastor's Wife and Food Blogger
Want more insight into my life as a Pastor's wife and food blogger? Then, read on! If not, ignore this section. 🙂 This is a place for me to write what's on my mind and journal some of the crowning moments of my week.
This week flew by, as does every other week I guess. Ben started inviting some of the guys from the college group over each week for a movie in our theater room. They tend to choose movies with a controversial angle, such as The Prestige (was Christian Bale's twin character a clone, or a blood brother?) and The Manchurian Candidate (was Denzel's character programmed to kill Liev Shreiber's character?) Either way, it is fun for us to have some of the kids over and let them enjoy the blessing God has provided us in a nice, comfortable movie room.
After a week of being sick with a runny nose and cough, I took Judah to the doctor to find out he also has a minor ear infection. He's now, thankfully, recovered and back to normal. Hopefully, my sleep will be restored soon, as well. 🙂
Last night we were invited to our friends' home for "movie clip night" where each guest brought a few favorite clips from their favorite movies. I signed up to bring dessert, which is why I made the Death by Chocolate linked above. It was a hit for sure! I've never heard of a party like this before, but it was a fun way to learn a little more about each other, while being reminded of some great movies. We watched scenes from movies that ranged from raging male testosterone movies like Black Hawk Down, To End All Wars and Braveheart, to female loving chick-flick's like Bride Wars and Moulin Rouge, to timeless comedies such as Dumb and Dumber, Nacho Libre' and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, to family classics like Sound of Music and It's a Wonderful Life.
Today we are relaxing and trying to stay warm from the abnormal cold weather hitting Apple Valley this weekend. We even saw a little bit of snow falling this morning! I've heard this won't be the end of it...
