Ingredients Needed
You don't need much to make these yummy snacks. I used ready-made pizza bases to keep it as simple and quick to make as possible. There are just too many things to do during holidays, so using pre-made ingredients just makes sense, right?
Here's what you need:
- Refrigerated pizza crust dough -- If you have time to spare, you can make pizza dough from scratch as well. If you are buying this, any brand will do. There are also personal-sized pizza doughs that you can use instead. Another option is to use round mini pitas, however, there is no need to pre-bake them.
- Pizza sauce -- You can also use marinara sauce or plain tomato sauce if you prefer.
- Large slices of pepperoni -- These should be big enough to almost cover the whole dough. However, if you cannot find large pepperonis, small ones are fine. Or, just use chopped pepperoni pieces.
- Mozzarella cheese -- Deli slices are ideal for shaping. You can use other types of cheese like cheddar, gruyere, provolone, or gouda.
- Olives -- These are used to make the eyes for the mummy's face. You can also use them to make eyes for the ghost pizza but that is optional.
Equipment Needed
You need the following to make Halloween pizza:
- Cookie cutters -- Use a 3-inch round cutter to shape the pizza dough. If you do not have one, you can use a large drinking glass instead. Look for fun Halloween-themed cutters for different designs!
- Baking Sheet -- No need for a pizza pan, just a regular baking sheet will do!
- Cutting board and knife
How to Make Halloween Pizza
It takes just a little imagination and creativity to make these mini mummy and ghost pizzas for the holidays. You can make a batch in just 15 minutes and you can easily double this recipe to make more if you are feeding a crowd.
Preparations:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
Steps:
- Prepare the mini pizza dough. Roll the dough into a rectangle on top of your cutting board. Cut into 3-inch discs using a drinking glass or cookie cutter.
- Pre-bake the dough. Place mini discs on the prepared baking sheet at least one inch apart. Pre-bake for 8 minutes.
- Shape the cheese. Make ghost-shaped cheese slices using a cookie cutter. Then slice some of the other cheese slices into thin strips for the mummies. Set them aside.
- Assemble! Take the pre-baked crust out of the oven, and then spread a tablespoon or two of sauce on top of each.
- For the ghost pizza: Place the large pepperoni over the sauce, and then layer with a ghost-shaped slice of cheese. You can further decorate them with green or black olives to give the ghost eyes and mouth, but this is optional.
- For the mummy pizza: Place the large pepperoni over top of sauce, and then arrange the cheese strips horizontally in uneven lines to make the mummy face. Use two slices olives for the eyes.
- Bake. Bake the mini pizza for 2 to 3 more minutes. Serve while warm and enjoy!
Helpful Tips
- Do not forget to pre-bake the crust. The first time I made these I forgot, so the longer baking time with the toppings made the cheese melt and lose its shape.
- Bake only until the cheese JUST starts to melt. Do not let them bubble because it will ruin the designs.
- Eyes on ghosts are optional, but necessary for the mummy faces.
Serving Suggestions
- Fun idea! Make a pizza station where kids can make their own Halloween pizzas using different cookie cutters and toppings. I am sure there will be an adult or two who will join the fun!
