I signed up with a co-worker, Margie, to take the Wilton cake decorating (level 1) class this month at Joann Fabrics. It's a four-week class and teaches the basics of cake decorating, making your own decorating icing, and creating the famous Wilton flower. Easy peasy, right? Well...almost.
Once we get to class, it's fun and easy! But, the prep work is another story. Last night was my 2nd week, and the prep for it was unbelievably time-consuming. Now, I'm not saying this to steer you away from ever taking these courses. In fact, I hope this isn't discouraging you because I think these classes are absolutely awesome and I recommend them to all of you! But, I do want to share that I spent 2 hours Sunday night icing my cake and making the other colored icings I needed to bring to class in order to decorate. Maybe I'm just unusually slow.
I totally missed some other icing listed in the lesson book that I was supposed to bring. But, it all worked out fine because Margie made the icing I forgot to make, and she forgot the icing that I actually made! So we shared.
The week 2 class was so much fun! Week 1 was spent just listening to and watching the instructor (who is amazing by the way). It was fun to see how easily and perfectly she iced her cake! Then last night we had the chance to practice stars, borders and writing.
My only complaint is that the class was not long enough, because by the time we were done practicing, there was not much time to decorate our cakes! So, I had to rush and do something not as creative and just very simple. I can't wait to do cupcakes and learn how to make clowns next week! (Although I don't think I'll ever make a clown cake.)
