Hey guys! Welcome to my third Kidstir review! Today I'm going to reveal the contents of the October box. What a FUN kit we received this month! Using a Halloween theme, Kidstir taught both me and Judah a bunch of neat lessons in the kitchen. If you missed my other two reviews where I go into more detail about what Kidstir is and how it works, go read the first and second reviews then come on back here!
This month's theme was "Spooky Celebration". We were so excited to open the box and see the contents. If you remember, Kidstir always includes three recipes and three kid-sized cooking utensils that go along with each recipe. Judah has so much fun opening the kits and digging through the box to find the goodies! For the Spooky Celebration kit, we found a Freaky Freeze ice mold, a ravioli pasta press and candy eyeballs! Of course, the eyeballs were Judah's favorite.
After checking out the contents and reviewing the recipes, Judah immediately added the new pages to his cookbook binder under the tab titled "Celebrations". I mentioned it in my last review, but I have to stress again how much I love the colorful and cheerful designs of the Kidstir recipe pages
It is so helpful that the first page you see when you open the box includes a list of all the ingredients you need for each recipe. So before Judah even tore into the rest of the kit, I went through the list and picked up any ingredients we didn't already have on hand. I only had to get a few things and had most everything else already in our pantry! Score!
The three recipes for the October kit are Witch's Brew (a spiced apple cider with frozen skulls & bones), Scary-oli (cheese ravioli from scratch) and Yummy Mummies (zucchini cupcakes with spooky eyes). We started with the Yummy Mummies since...you know...cupcakes. 😉 Judah knows to wash his hands before starting and then he practiced turning on the oven to let it preheat.
We then picked out cupcake liners, lined them in the pan and mixed up the batter together. Judah thought it was pretty cool to shred the zucchini. And, he did a GREAT job spooning the batter into each individual cupcake liner. I didn't have to help him at all!
As the cupcakes baked, we paused for some silly face photos because silly faces make everything more fun!
After the cupcakes cooled, our neighbor friends came over and frosted them with us. Judah helped teach Ginger how to spread the frosting on the cupcakes to look like mummies and then carefully place the candy eyeballs (included in the kit).
The next day we made the Witch's Brew with frozen bones and skulls (ice cream molds). This was a very easy recipe, but we had to wait overnight to drink it so that the spices could blend into the cider and the ice molds could freeze.
It was so fun to taste the spiced cider with Judah, but even better that he learned how to make it. When adding every spice, I had Judah first take a sniff of it so he can start learning the different smells. The bones and skulls were also easy, with a quick ice cream type mixture (heavy cream and sugar) poured into the provided molds. When Judah drank it the next day, he gave it a big thumbs up!
I am saving the Scary-oli recipe for Friday afternoon for a Halloween day activity. It will be the most difficult recipe in this month's kit, so I'm really excited to see how Judah does with it. At the same time, I've never made homemade ravioli, so I'm very eager to learn! I think it's totally cool, too, that the kit included a pasta press for this recipe. A great addition to my kitchen collection! Each kit also includes learning activities and games.
