Hey guys! This is my second review for Kidstir, which must tell you how much I love this company. Back in July, you saw the fun Judah and I had in my kitchen with our first two cooking kits. Today, we are going to take a little inside peek at the September kit. Warning: It's awesome!
This month's kit was called "Bake Me Happy". The three recipes included were Banana Bread, Popovers and Apple Crisp. We loved all three! But, what was even more important to me was how many cooking skills Judah learned from each project.
Let's start by talking about what happens when first opening the kit. It came to us in the mail (and, of course, Judah loooooves receiving mail). He's always excited to see what's inside, especially finding what fun tools are included. Each Kidstir cooking kit comes with three tools or ingredients to complement the recipes.
This kit had a child-sized whisk, a potholder shaped like a puppy, and a special Chocolate Swirl topping.
Judah pulled out the contents of the kit, then started organizing the pages for his cookbook. When you sign up for a subscription, you will receive a cookbook with tab dividers for categories like Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Salad, Baking, etc. Each kit falls into one of these categories, where your child is instructed to add their pages to the corresponding tab.
Judah did a great job adding the pages to the Baking tab of his cookbook. He was very careful in making sure they were in the correct order. On a side note, I love the design of the Kidstir cookbook pages. They are colorful and cheery, which makes following a recipe much more fun for the kids!
Once the pages were secured into the book, we got to work on the first recipe: Go Bananas! (banana bread). I took a few step by step photos of us making this bread together, but then forgot to take a photo of the bread once it was baked! It turned out SO well and was extremely delicious! We brought it with us for our trip to Nashville and ate it for breakfast every day.
While completing this project, Judah learned how to successfully crack eggs, and tuned his skills for scooping flour and whisking/stirring ingredients. He used the whisk that was provided in the kit, and then we swirled in the chocolate spread that was also provided. It was sesame seed chocolate spread (or chocolate tahini) and was delicious! A great nut-free alternative to Nutella!
He was introduced to cooking spray for the bread pan, and I had to monitor that closely as he almost sprayed me instead!
I'm starting to get Simon involved in the kitchen, too. It's a little too early for him to do much, but at 17 months, he can definitely hold utensils and start getting the right feel! He loved being part of the mix!
In this month's kit, we also learned about the world of bananas. A worksheet was included with a riddle we had to solve that told us which country produces the most bananas around the world. Do you know the answer? Take a guess!
The other two recipes (Poppin' Popover and Awesome Apple Crisp) were equally as fun, but I didn't do step by step photos as I wanted Judah and I to just enjoy our time. (Above are the popovers Judah made.) Each recipe had their own related learning activities, too. We also learned how to make homemade whipped cream and practiced the correct way to whisk, along with a few other included games.
Get your monthly subscription at a 25% off discount for the first month! The normal price is $19.95/month, but with promo code SEEDED25, you can get 25% off that amount for the first month!
